New Music Review: Ben Harper 'Give Till It's Gone'

Ben Harper's 10th studio album, Give Till It's Gone, is a focused effort and emotional bearing of the soul, which comes after the breakup with wife, Laura Dern.  This record is a solo effort without Harper's backing bands the Innocent Criminals or the Relentless7 and his last for longtime label, Virgin Records.

Songs such as “Don’t Give Up on Me Now” and “I Will Not Be Broken" both evoke strong emotions in Harper and gone is the neo-hippie and rootsy rock of past records in favor of a leaner and more deliberate approach to song craft on Give Till It's Gone.  Classic Ben Harper guitar soloing can be found on  “Do It for You, Do It for Us” while "Get There From Here" opts for synthesizers and features a guest appearance by Ringo Starr on drums.

Give Till It's Gone is a solid effort that deals with the emotional pain of a breakup and how to let it go; Harper just makes it sound so good!

The Showbiz Kids Rating: 7 out of possible 10
