Trey Anastasio-Paper Wheels Review (liveforlivemusic.com)

Artists, like all living things, are subject to evolution, albeit to varying degrees. If you are a fan of Phish's Trey Anastasio and his solo project, the Trey Anastasio Band (TAB), then you have been privileged to witness this man's remarkable growth, as an artist and as a man, over the past few decades. Though his growth has been punctuated by some marked de-evolution, the artist that graces the stage today is a bastion of health, creativity, positive energy and musical variety. And with the imminent release of his 10th solo effort, the LP Paper Wheels, a whole new breed of compositions is being served up by Anastasio and his co-conspirators; namely his superb band and his songwriting partners Steve Pollak and Tom Marshall.

On the turntable this Sunday...Frontiers

Frontiers is the eighth studio album by the American Rock band Journey, released in February 1983 on the Columbia Records label. This is the last album to feature bassist Ross Valory until 1996's Trial by Fire.
The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and would garner four top 40 singles: "After the Fall" (No. 23), "Send Her My Love" (No. 23), "Faithfully" (No. 12), and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" (No. 8), and a rock radio hit in "Chain Reaction". The album would later achieve the RIAA certification of six times platinum.

The album had been sequenced and prepped for pressing when, in a last minute conference with Journey's A&R man Michael Dillbeck, two songs were pulled from the original lineup, "Ask the Lonely" and "Only the Young." These two tracks were replaced with "Back Talk" and "Troubled Child." "Ask the Lonely" was utilized in the soundtrack for the film Two of a Kind. "Only the Young" would find its way into the Top Ten two years later, joining the soundtrack of the movie Vision Quest

Frontiers was the band's highest-charting album in the United Kingdom, reaching No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart in 1983.

In 2005, Frontiers was ranked number 363 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time.

"We Did It, Mom": Frank Zappa’s Roxy The Movie Premieres in LA (jambands.com)

Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood hosted the world premiere of the late Frank Zappa’s Roxy The Movie last week. The concert film, over 40 years in the making, presented Zappa’s now legendary run of 1973 shows at the Roxy that resulted in his stellar Roxy and Elsewhere album. The film’s existence is somewhat of an improbable triumph; suffering at the time of its making insurmountable technical difficulties, with the raw footage stored away in Zappa’s vault until its resurrection this year.

Dave Gahan on Soulsavers, Depeche Mode's Future (Rolling Stone)

It's a chilly October morning in New York, and Dave Gahan is feeling impish. "I hope you play basketball," the singer, 53, says sharply to a towering waiter at Gemma, a bustling hotel restaurant on the East Village's infamous Bowery. On the turntable this Sunday...V

V is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Wavves. The album was released on October 2, 2015 through Ghost Ramp and Warner Bros. Records.

Jon Caramanica of The New York Times called it "a peppy album about the tragic pleasures of wallowing in poor choices. [...] The balance of good cheer and dark clouds is partly in the arrangements — V comprises exceedingly bright songs verging on true pop-punk. It’s probably the cleanest-sounding Wavves album to date."Consequence of Sound's Collin Brennan felt the album "visceral and downright volatile [...] a self-assured record penned by a songwriter who’s anything but sure of himself, and that dynamic shines right through the curtain of fuzz." The 405's William Tomer commented that "one who chooses to listen to the album in full--an exceedingly easy task to do repeatedly given the immediate appeal of the record--will be treated to one of the most down-to-earth takes on what it is like to be actively battling your demons, internal or otherwise." Jon Dolan of Rolling Stone felt "their songs have never been sharper, brighter or more confident."

On the turntable this Sunday...Gaucho

Gaucho is the seventh studio album by the American jazz rock band Steely Dan, released in 1980. The sessions for Gaucho represent the band's atypical penchant for studio perfectionism and obsessive recording technique. To record the album, the band used at least 42 different musicians, spent over a year in the studio, and far exceeded the original monetary advance given by the record label.

During the two-year span in which the album was recorded, the band was plagued by a number of creative, personal and professional problems. MCA, Warner Bros. and Steely Dan had a three-way legal battle over the rights to release the album. After it was released, jazz musician Keith Jarrett threatened the band with legal action for writing credit on the title song "Gaucho".

Gaucho marked a significant stylistic change for Steely Dan, introducing a more minimal, groove and atmosphere-based format. The harmonically complex chord changes that were a distinctive mark of earlier Steely Dan songs are less prominent on Gaucho, with the record's songs tending to revolve around a single rhythm or mood. Gaucho proved to be Steely Dan's final studio album before a 20-year absence from the recording industry.

36 Years Ago: Joe Jackson Pushes Boundaries With ‘I’m the Man’ (Ultimate Classic Rock)

It was the era of the angry young man. That was the label applied in the late ’70s to Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and Graham Parker – songwriters and frontmen who became famous on the heels of the British punk explosion. Although these fellows created music as unfettered as the Sex Pistols and the Damned, they seemed to channel the movement’s gritted-teeth rage with their lyrics more than their music. Call it pub rock, call it punk rock, call it New Wave — this was energetic rock with a point of view.

On the turntable this Sunday...Dodge and Burn

Dodge and Burn is the third studio album by the American rock band The Dead Weather. It was released worldwide on September 25, 2015, through Third Man Records.

In October 2013, Third Man Records announced the forthcoming release of a limited edition 7-inch vinyl record containing two newly recorded Dead Weather songs. "Open Up (That's Enough)" and its B-side, "Rough Detective," were released exclusively in this format through the label's record subscription service, The Vault. These two tracks were the first pair of songs to be released in vinyl-only physical form through The Vault. "Buzzkill(er)" and "It's Just Too Bad" were released in similar fashion on November 4, 2014. These four songs and eight others would make up the band's third studio album, Dodge and Burn. The songs were recorded from approximately July 2014 to July 2015 when members of the band had the available time or inspiration to record.  The third single in advance of the album, "I Feel Love (Every Million Miles)," was made available for download on August 21, 2015.   It was released on 7-inch vinyl, backed with "Cop and Go," through The Vault in September 2015.

Community has always been important to Don Henley. Whether fighting for the rights of artists and songwriters, launching the Walden Woods Project to protect the land and legacy of Henry David Thoreau or soldiering on with his fractious musical brethren the Eagles, community has long been a cornerstone of his life and art and it provides the foundation for his new album Cass County.
