How Come These 10 Rock Artists Have Never Played The Super Bowl (UCR)

There was a time when rock acts dominated the Super Bowl halftime show. In the past, the Rolling StonesPaul McCartneyTom PettyBruce SpringsteenU2 and Prince have all taken the headlining spot, while ZZ TopAerosmithand Sting are just some of the rockers to make cameos alongside other artists. Yes, that's a formidable list of rock stars, but in recent memory, the event has been a decidedly pop-focused affair. The last rock band to headline the Super Bowl halftime show was Coldplay in 2016, and prior to that was the Who in 2010.

On the turntable this Sunday...I Want You

I Want You is the fourteenth studio album by American soul musician Marvin Gaye, released March 16, 1976, on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place throughout 1975 and 1976 at Motown Recording Studios, also known as Hitsville West, and Gaye's personal studio Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, California. The album has often been noted by critics for producer Leon Ware's exotic, low-key production and the erotic, sexual themes in his and Gaye's songwriting. The album's cover artwork adapts neo-mannerist artist Ernie Barnes's famous painting The Sugar Shack (1971).
I Want You consisted of Gaye's first recorded studio material since his highly successful and well-received album Let's Get It On (1973). While it marked a change in musical direction for Gaye, departing from his trademark Motown and doo-wop-influenced sound for funky, light-disco soul, the album maintained and expanded on his previous work's sexual themes. Following a mixed response from critics at the time of its release, I Want You has earned retrospective recognition from writers and music critics as one of Gaye's most controversial works and influential to such musical styles as disco, quiet stormR&B, and neo soul.

On the turntable this Sunday...Long Player

Long Player, from 1971, was the second album by the British rock group Faces. Among the highlights are a live cover version of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", the wistful "Richmond" and "Sweet Lady Mary", the rave-up "Had Me a Real Good Time" and the opening "Bad 'n' Ruin". "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "I Feel So Good" were recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York on October 11 1970.
A single version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" appeared just ahead of the album, featuring a studio version of the song in lieu of the live version presented on the album itself.
On 28 August 2015, the album was reissued in a remastered and expanded form, including two previously unreleased outtakes, "Whole Lotta Woman" and an instrumental called "Sham-Mozzal". Two more live tracks from the Fillmore East show were also included. The reissue used the U.S. cover artwork.

Picking the best song from every Paul McCartney album doesn't always mean checking the Billboard charts.

True, the former Beatles star went on to notch nine No. 1 songs as a solo star and leader of Wings. In all, he's claimed 23 Top 10 smashes, most recently with "FourFiveSeconds," a 2015 collaboration with Rihanna and Kanye West that rose to No. 4. But, a scant four of those big hits made our list.

On the turntable this Sunday...A Live One

A Live One is a live album by the American rock band Phish, released on June 27, 1995, by Elektra Records. The album was the band's first official live release, their first album to be certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and one of the best-selling releases in their catalog. The track-listing for A Live One was selected by the four members of Phish, each of whom reviewed the concert tapes from their 1994 fall tour and drafted a list of personal favorite performances. The band then compiled a master list of 560 song performances that had received mention by at least two of the members, which was further narrowed down to a shortlist of 30 songs, from which the final tracklist was selected.
In addition to utilizing their own selections, Phish involved their fanbase in the compilation of the album. The band posted an official thread on the rec.music.phish Usenet newsgroup, in which the message board's users were encouraged to suggest performances they believed should be included. The July 8, 1994 version of "Stash" was brought to the band's attention through the thread, and was ultimately chosen for inclusion on the album.
