On the turntable this Sunday...Quadrophenia

Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by the English rock band The Who, released as a double album on 26 October 1973 by Track Records. It is the group's second rock opera. Set in London and Brighton in 1965, the story follows a young mod named Jimmy and his search for self-worth and importance. Quadrophenia is the only Who album entirely composed by Pete Townshend.
The group started work on the album in 1972, trying to follow up Tommy and Who's Next, both of which had achieved substantial critical and commercial success. Recording was delayed while bassist John Entwistle and singer Roger Daltrey recorded solo albums and drummer Keith Moon worked on films. Because a new studio was not finished in time, the group had to use Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio. The album makes significant use of Townshend's multi-track synthesizers and sound effects, as well as Entwistle's layered horn parts, in addition to the group's typical playing styles, especially from Moon. Relationships between the group and manager Kit Lambert broke down irretrievably during recording and Lambert had left the band's service by the time the album was released.
Quadrophenia was released to a positive reception in both the UK and the US, but the resulting tour was marred with problems with backing tapes replacing the additional instruments on the album, and the stage piece was retired in early 1974. It was revived in 1996 with a larger ensemble, and a further tour took place in 2012. The album made a positive impact on the mod revival movement of the late 1970s, and the resulting film adaptation, released in 1979, was successful. The album has been reissued on compact disc several times, and seen a number of remixes that corrected some perceived flaws in the original.

Watch Steve Perry's Old-School Video for 'We're Still Here' (UCR)

Steve Perry goes traditional in his new video for "We're Still Here."

The former Journey singer released other videos for last year's comeback solo album Traces, but they were either lyric, static-image or lip-synced in-studio clips. The new video recalls those old-school conceptual ones MTV used to show in the '80s.

The Most Awesome Live Album From Every Rock Legend (UCR)

Live albums give artists the chance to bring a concert experience directly into their fans' homes. Studio efforts thrive on multiple takes, a controlled environment and a directive toward perfection. In contrast, live releases often incorporate improvisation, jam sessions and a general feeling that anything can happen – even though a lot of thought does go into song selection.

10 People and Events Left Out of Motley Crue's 'The Dirt' Movie (UCR)

Motley Crue's long-awaited biopic The Dirt manages to pack quite a bit into its hour and 47-minute running time.

One thing director Jeff Tremaine can’t be criticized for is his inability to cover all the highlights, low points and enough drugs, drinks and instances of sexual intercourse to boggle the mind. So, unless it were a 26-hour miniseries, there was no way the entire history of this band could be covered.

On the turntable this Sunday...Too Fast For Love

Too Fast for Love is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Mötley Crüe. The first edition of 900 copies was released on November 10, 1981, on the band's original label Leathür RecordsElektra Records signed the band the following year, at which point the album was remixed and partially re-recorded. This re-release, with a different track listing and slightly different artwork (e.g., red lettering on the cover and a different interior photograph of the band), has become the standard version from which all later reissues derive. The re-recorded album also removed the song "Stick to Your Guns", though it is featured on a bonus track version of the album. The original mix of the album remained unreleased on CD until 2002, when it was included in the Music to Crash Your Car to: Vol. 1 box set compilation.
While the album only reached number 77 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the United States, it would ultimately reach platinum status.
The songs "Stick to Your Guns" and "Live Wire" were released as singles for the album.

Mötley Crüe Cover Songs Ranked

Motley Crue's decision to record a version of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" isn't all that surprising when you realize how prevalent cover songs have been throughout their career. It was a cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room" that gave the band its first top 10 hit after all, and three of their first four albums included a song first made famous by one of their musical heroes.

Walk This Way: 62 Rock 'n' Roll Sneakers (Ultimate Classic Rock)

Thanks to the classic idiom, everyone knows that sex and drugs pair well with rock 'n’ roll. Now we may have to add another indulgence to that list: shoes.

Rockers creating apparel is nothing new. One only needs to stop by a merchandise tent at any concert to see the array of T-shirts, jackets and other clothing items available for sale. Still, artists collaborating with shoemakers is a relatively modern occurrence.

London Calling is the third studio album by English rock band The Clash. It was originally released as a double album in the United Kingdom on 14 December 1979 by CBS Records, and in the United States in January 1980 by Epic Records.
The Clash recorded the album at Wessex Sound Studios in London during August, September and November 1979, following a change in management and a period of writer's block for Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, the band's lead vocalists, guitarists, and lyricists. Considered by critics to be a post-punk album, London Calling reflects the band's growing interest in a range of styles beyond their punk roots, including reggaerockabillyskaNew Orleans R&Bpoplounge jazz, and hard rock. Themes explored in the songs include social displacement, unemploymentracial conflictdrug use, and the responsibilities of adulthood.
The album was a top ten chart success in the UK, and its lead single "London Calling" was a top 20 single. The album has sold over five million copies worldwide, and was certified platinum in the United States, indicating one million sold there. A widespread critical success, it was ranked at number eight on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003.

Trey Anastasio Talks Yo La Tengo (jambands.com)

Trey Anastasio doesn’t use openers very often, but when he does, those bookings, more often than not, end up feeling more like curations than simple support slots. On the turntable this Sunday...Diamond Life

Diamond Life is the debut studio album by English band Sade. It was first released in the United Kingdom on 16 July 1984 by Epic Records and in the United States on 27 February 1985 by Portrait Records. After studying fashion design, and later modelling, Sade Adu began backup singing with British band Pride. During this time Adu and three of the original members of "Pride"—Paul Anthony Cook, Paul Denman and Stuart Matthewman—left the group to form their own band called Sade. Following various demos and performances, Sade received interest from record labels and later signed to Epic.
Recording for the album began in 1983 at The Power Plant in London and took a total of six weeks to complete. The album's content was written by the group Sade whilst the production was handled by Robin Millar. A total of fifteen songs were recorded for the album with the use of live instruments that used sonically experimental material. The album contained a variety of musical elements including souljazz and sophisti-pop, with lyrics revolving mainly around themes of love. The album spawned four singles, including the hit singles "Your Love Is King" and "Smooth Operator".
Upon release, Diamond Life was met with acclaim from music critics, and went on to win the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985. Commercially, the album was also a success, charting highly in the UK and US, and was later certified multi-platinum in both regions. Diamond Life went on to sell over six million copies worldwide, becoming one of the top-selling debut recordings of the era, and became the best-selling debut by a British female vocalist, a record that stood for twenty-four years.
