On the turntable this Sunday...Fly By Night

Fly by Night is the second studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in February 1975 on Mercury Records. It was the first Rush album to showcase elements of progressive rock for which the band has become known. It was also the first to feature lyricist and drummer Neil Peart.
In March 1974, the original Rush line-up of guitarist Alex Lifeson, drummer John Rutsey, and singer and bassist Geddy Lee released their self-titled debut album. In the following four months, however, Rutsey fell ill following complications with diabetes and had to sit out from some gigs while the group continued with a replacement, Jerry Fielding.  Rutsey rejoined the group for a month of club dates before Lifeson and Lee decided it was best for Rutsey to leave due to the difficulty in managing his health on tour and musical differences between them. Lee recalled: "We were guilt-ridden at first, but we realised that it's just the way it had to be. He wasn't happy and we weren't happy".
Rush auditioned five drummers, the fourth of which was Neil Peart of a local band named Hush. The three played along to "Anthem", a song mostly written while Rutsey was in the group that Rush later recorded for Fly by Night.  Lifeson and Lee were so impressed with Peart's style they felt embarrassed for the fifth drummer who had prepared by writing charts to their songs to follow.  Peart joined on July 29, 1974, the day of Lee's birthday, two weeks before the band's first US tour kicked off on August 14 at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann. By the end of their year the group had written new material for a follow-up album.

On the turntable this Sunday...KISS

Kiss is the debut studio album by American rock band Kiss, released on February 18, 1974. Much of the material on the album was written by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, as members of their pre-Kiss band Wicked Lester. Simmons estimated that the entire process of recording and mixing took three weeks, while co-producer Richie Wise has stated it took just 13 days.
The album was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York City, which was owned by the company that owned Buddah RecordsNeil Bogart, founder of Casablanca Records, was an executive at Buddah prior to forming Casablanca.  Casablanca Records held a party at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles to celebrate the West Coast release of Kiss (February 18) and to introduce the record company to the press and other record industry executives.
In keeping with the Casablanca theme, the party included palm trees and a Humphrey Bogart lookalike. Kiss performed their usual loud and bombastic stage show, which turned Warner Bros. Records (Casablanca's record distributor) against the group. Soon after the show, Warner Bros. contacted Neil Bogart and threatened to end their deal with Casablanca if Kiss did not remove their makeup. With manager Bill Aucoin's backing, Kiss refused. Shortly after the release of Kiss, Warner Bros. released Casablanca from their contract.
Kiss began their first album tour with a performance at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in EdmontonAlberta on February 5, 1974. A few weeks later, they made their first national TV appearance on ABC's In Concert, followed by a performance of "Firehouse" on The Mike Douglas Show. During the interview portion of the show, Gene Simmons declared himself to be "evil incarnate", eliciting nervousness, confused reactions from the studio audience, to which comedian Totie Fields humorously commented, "Wouldn't it be funny if he's just a nice Jewish boy underneath the makeup?" Although neither confirming or denying his Jewish heritage, Simmons replied, "You should only know", to which, Fields countered, "I do. You can't hide the hook", referring to Simmons' nose.
The album's cover showed the group positioned against a black background in a pose visually reminiscent of the BeatlesWith the Beatles album (Peter Criss stated that this was the visual effect the band was looking for). Gene Simmons has since stated that Meet The Beatles was a big inspiration to him. Three of the four band members applied their own makeup for the album cover photo, as they usually did, but Criss' "Catman" makeup was applied by a professional, whose work came out looking quite a bit different from the look Criss had established, and to which he would return immediately afterward. Ace Frehley, wanting to impress the other members of Kiss, dyed his hair with silver hairspray, which easily came out with shampoo. According to Criss, photographer Joel Brodsky thought Kiss were literally clowns, and wanted to place balloons behind the group for the shoot. Brodsky denied this, chalking it up to imagination. As this was also the first album for the group, they still had yet to perfect the look they would come to be known for later on. For example, Simmons' "Demon" makeup, while noticeable as his, appears rough and not in the definitive form he later became known for.

On the turntable this Sunday...Under the Table and Dreaming

Under the Table and Dreaming is the debut studio album from the Dave Matthews Band, released on September 27, 1994.
The album's first single was "What Would You Say", featuring John Popper of Blues Traveler on harmonica. Two other singles from the album followed, "Ants Marching" and "Satellite". By March 16, 2000, the album had sold six million copies, and was certified 6× platinum by the RIAA.
The acoustic guitar tracks on the album were played by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. During the recording sessions, Matthews and Reynolds would sit face-to-face with a piece of glass between them, playing the same guitar part. This was done twice for each song, resulting in four acoustic guitar tracks (two from Matthews, two from Reynolds) all playing the same part on each song. Producer Steve Lillywhite frequently turned the volume down on Matthews' parts and turned the volume up on Reynolds' parts, resulting in Reynolds' guitar playing being more prominent on the final album. Reynolds then overdubbed additional acoustic and electric guitar parts.
Matthews has stated during performances that the harmonica solo performed by John Popper on "What Would You Say" was done in only five to ten minutes, while Matthews was in the bathroom.
One of Dave Matthews Band's most popular live songs, "Granny", was recorded in the studio sessions for this album and was originally intended to be the first single before being cut from the album.
"#34" is the only instrumental track on the album although it was played live with lyrics on nine occasions in 1993, prior to the band taking it to the studio. The band originally recorded the song with lyrics, but they were removed from the final album cut. On some pressings of the album there are 22 blank tracks between "Pay for What You Get" and "#34", so that the latter appears as track number 34. Other pressings simply have the 12th track pre-pended by a period of silence.
The album's title comes from a lyric of the song "Ants Marching": "He remembers being small / playing under the table and dreaming".
The album was dedicated "In memory of Anne" for Matthews' older sister Anne, who was killed by her husband in 1994 in a murder–suicide. Included in the jewel case packet is a picture of Dave Matthews and one of Anne's children.

On the turntable this Sunday...Currents

Currents is the third studio album by Australian rock band Tame Impala, released on 17 July 2015 by Modular Recordings through Universal Music Australia in Australia, Fiction Records in Europe and Interscope Records in the United States. Like the group's previous two albums, Currents was written, recorded, performed, and produced by primary member Kevin Parker. For the first time, Parker also mixed the music. It was also the first time that Parker recorded all instruments by himself; the album featured no other collaborators.
After the release of the group's previous album, Lonerism (2012), Parker began work on Currents, largely recording at his home studio in Fremantle. He engrossed himself with writing and recording, and in keeping with his reputation as a musical auteur, laboured over the details of each song, ultimately causing the release date to be delayed by two months. In contrast to the psychedelic rock sound of the project's prior work, Currents marks a shift to more dance-oriented music, with more emphasis placed on synthesisers than guitars. Parker was inspired to seek a change out of desire to hear Tame Impala's music played in dance clubs and a more communal setting. Thematically, the record is about the process of personal transformation, which many critics interpreted to be the result of a romantic break-up. The album's cover art depicting vortex shedding is a visualisation of these themes.
Currents was preceded by the release of the singles "Let It Happen", "'Cause I'm a Man", "Disciples", and "Eventually". It became the group's best charting release, debuting at number one in Australia, number three in the United Kingdom, and at number four in the United States. Currents has sold over 120,000 copies in North America as of December 2015. Like its predecessors, the album received critical acclaim, and appeared on various critics' year-end lists of the best albums of 2015. At the 2015 ARIA Music AwardsCurrents was awarded Best Rock Album and Album of the Year, while at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, it was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album.
