Queen's 10 Most Underrated Songs (UCR)

For the title of a biopic about them, Queen chose the name of their groundbreaking song "Bohemian Rhapsody."

It's their signature hit, reaching the Top 10 on two separate occasions -- 1975 and 1992 -- but it's far from the only song they're known for.

Freddie Mercury: The Man, the Star ... In His Own Words (UCR)

Bohemian Rhapsody star Remi Malek recently admitted it had been an “arduous” task to tell Freddie Mercury’s life story in the course of the two-hour movie. Indeed, the Queen icon himself, despite years of global fame, struggled to explain himself to his own satisfaction.

Below are a series of quotes taken from interviews he gave between 1973 and 1987, which illustrate an artist, a star and a man who expressed complexity, energy and loneliness in a variety of ways. Mercurial indeed.

On the turntable...Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)

Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) is the debut album by alternative hip hop group Digable Planets. It was released on February 9, 1993, by Pendulum/Elektra Records.
The album was produced by Digable Planets' Ishmael Butler ("Butterfly") and features raps from Butler, Irving and Viera. The production leans heavily on jazz samples, Butler explaining that “it was all about resources, really...I just went and got the records that I had around me. And a lot of those were my dad’s shit, which was lots of jazz. The whole concept of ‘We’re a jazz group’ didn’t go down like that. Except that DJ Premier was a big influence, and he sampled a lot of jazz.”
Lyrically, the tone of the album is less overtly political than its successor Blowout Comb, but still touches on issues such as abortion rights (La Femme Fetal) and the drug abuses of jazz musicians (Last of the Spiddyocks). The album title derives from Nueva refutaciĆ³n del tiempo ("A New Refutation of Time"), an essay by Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges, as well as the tendency of earlier jazz musicians in naming their albums (Moanin'Cookin', etc.)

On the turntable this Sunday...Unorthodox Jukebox

Unorthodox Jukebox is the second studio album by American singer and songwriter  Bruno Mars. It was released on December 7, 2012, by Atlantic Records. It serves as the follow-up to Mars' debut record Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010). The album was initially planned to be more "energetic" than his previous work, but, it ended presenting a wide range of styles such as reggae rockdisco and soul music. The singer co-wrote the whole record and worked with several past collaborators, while enlisting new producers and no guest vocalists. Lyrically, Unorthodox Jukeboxrevolves around the theme of relationships, incorporating more explicit lyrics and subjects than his previous material. Critical response to Unorthodox Jukebox was generally favorable; many reviewers compared Mars' work to that of his previous album, while others deemed its lyrics shallow.
On December 4, 2012, the album was made available to listen to in its entirety for a week before its release. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with first week sales of 192,000 copies, becoming Mars' best opening week to date. Unorthodox Jukebox later topped the chart, marking the singer's first album to do so. The record further peaked at number one in Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Unorthodox Jukebox became Mars' fastest-selling album in the latter country and its third in 2012, the third best-selling album in Australia in 2013, and the fifth in the United States in 2013.  The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reported that Unorthodox Jukebox was globally the fourth best-selling record in 2013, with 3.2 million copies, and 6 million units as of January 2015. The record won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.
The premiere of the album was preceded by the release of its lead single, "Locked Out of Heaven", which experienced commercial acclaim worldwide and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks. Meanwhile, promotional singles "Young Girls", "Moonshine" and "When I Was Your Man" were released in November and December 2012. Subsequently, four other singles ("When I Was Your Man", "Treasure", "Gorilla" and "Young Girls") were made available for consumption, with each one of them having major to minor success in the United States. Unorthodox Jukebox was further promoted through the Moonshine Jungle Tour.

On the turntable this Sunday...Physical Graffiti

Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released as a double album on 24 February 1975 by the group's new record label, Swan Song Records
The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album in early 1974 at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, which gave them ample time to improvise arrangements and experiment with recording. The total playing time covered three sides of an LP, so they decided to expand it into a double by including previously unreleased tracks from the sessions for the earlier albums Led Zeppelin IIILed Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy. The album covered a range of styles including hard rockprogressive rockrock 'n' roll and folk. The album was then mixed over summer 1974 and planned for an end-of year release. It was delayed because of the sleeve, which was designed by Peter Corriston and featured a theme around a tenement block in ManhattanNew York.
Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful upon its release and debuted at number one on album charts in both the US and the UK. It was promoted by a successful US tour and a five-night residency at Earl's Court, London, and has since been viewed as one of the group's strongest albums and the artistic peak of their career. The album has been reissued on CD several times, including an expansive 40th anniversary edition in 2015. Physical Graffiti was later certified 16× platinum in the United States by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2006, signifying shipments of over eight million copies.
