On the turntable this Sunday...Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too

Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band the New Radicals. Released October 16, 1998, it is their only album release before disbanding in 1999. The album charted in several North American and European countries, and was frontman Gregg Alexander's third album, following two unsuccessful albums released in 1989 and 1992, respectively. For the album's recording, Alexander enlisted numerous session musicians and is the only band member to perform on every song. The album's musical style was compared to numerous rock artists, including Billy CorganChumbawamba, and the Rolling Stones.
The album spawned two singles. "You Get What You Give" was released as the first single off the album, and was commercially successful worldwide, reaching number one in Canada and New Zealand and peaking in the top 40 in the US and the UK, among other countries. The album's second single, "Someday We'll Know," was released shortly after the group disbanded. It was far less successful than its predecessor, entering the top 40 only in Brazil and failing to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

32 Weird Facts About Hipgnosis' Most Famous Rock Album Covers (UCR)

When it comes to rock album cover art, it’s basically either BH or AH – before or after Hipgnosis.

Before, LPs typically featured basic portraiture of the artists. After, bands began to embrace the surrealism of Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali – even if they had no idea that those classic artists served as creative inspirations for Hipgnosis.

On the turntable this Sunday...The Nightly

The Nightfly is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Donald Fagen. Produced by Gary Katz, it was released October 1, 1982 by Warner Bros. Records. Fagen was previously best known for his work in the group Steely Dan, with whom he enjoyed a successful career in the 1970s. The band separated in 1981, leading Fagen to pursue a solo career. Although The Nightfly includes a number of production staff and musicians who had played on Steely Dan records, it was Fagen's first release without longtime collaborator Walter Becker.
Unlike most of Fagen's previous work, The Nightfly is almost blatantly autobiographical. Many of the songs relate to the cautiously optimistic mood of his suburban childhood in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and incorporate such topics as late-night jazz disc jockeysfallout shelters, and tropical vacations. Recorded over eight months at various studios between New York City and Los Angeles, the album is an early example of a fully digital recording in popular music. The nascent technology, as well as the perfectionist nature of its engineers and musicians, made the album difficult to record.
The Nightfly was well-received, both critically and commercially. It was certified platinum in both the US and UK, and generated two popular singles with top 40 hit "I.G.Y." and the MTV favorite "New Frontier". Among critics, The Nightfly gained widespread acclaim, and received seven nominations at the 1983 Grammy Awards. The relatively low-key but long-lived popularity of The Nightfly led Robert J. Toth of The Wall Street Journal in 2007 to dub the album "one of pop music's sneakiest masterpieces."

On the turntable this Sunday...OK Computer

OK Computer is the third studio album by English alternative rock band Radiohead. It was released in Japan on 21 May 1997 and in the United Kingdom on 16 June by Parlophone, and in the United States on 1 July by Capitol Records. The members of Radiohead self-produced the album with Nigel Godrich, an arrangement that the band has used on all of their subsequent albums to date. Other than the song "Lucky", which was recorded in 1995, Radiohead recorded the album in Oxfordshire and Bath between 1996 and early 1997, mostly in the historic mansion St. Catherine's Court. The band made a deliberate attempt to distance themselves from the guitar-oriented and lyrically introspective style of their previous album The Bends (1995). OK Computer's abstract lyrics, densely layered sound, and eclectic range of influences laid the groundwork for Radiohead's later, more experimental work.
Upon the album's delivery to the band's record company EMI, label representatives generally lowered their sales estimates, deeming the record's sound "uncommercial" and difficult to market. Nevertheless, OK Computer reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and became the band's highest album entry on US charts at the time, debuting at number 21 on the US Billboard 200. Five songs from the album—"Paranoid Android", "Karma Police", "Lucky", "No Surprises", and "Airbag"—were released as promotional singles. The album expanded Radiohead's international popularity and received widespread critical acclaim; in subsequent years, it has been cited by listeners, critics, and musicians as one of the greatest albums of all time. The album initiated a stylistic shift in British rock music away from the then-ubiquitous genre of Britpop toward melancholic, atmospheric styles of alternative rock that became more prevalent in the next decade. Critics and fans have noted that the album's lyrics and music depict a world fraught with rampant consumerismsocial alienation, emotional isolation, and political malaise; in this capacity, OK Computer is often interpreted as having prescient insight into the mood of 21st-century life. OK Computer has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. A remastered version with additional tracks, titled OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017, was released on 22 June 2017, commemorating the album's twentieth anniversary. In 2015, the album was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."

On the turntable this Sunday...Just Another Day In Paradise

Just Another Day in Paradise is a 1982 album by American singer-songwriter Bertie Higgins.
The album spawned the Top 10 single "Key Largo" as well as the title track which was released as a follow up. The single "Just Another Day in Paradise" was not as big a hit as "Key Largo" but received much airplay and also hit the Country charts as well.
In Asia, the other international hit "Casablanca" was generated from the album. The song was recorded by Japanese singer Hiromi Go in same year, and its cover version reached #2 on the Japanese chart, finally selling more than 500,000 copies. Likewise, this album that featured the original version of "Casablanca" achieved commercial success, and finally it became the second best-selling album of 1982 by a Western artist on that country's official hit parade, Oricon.
