On the turntable this Sunday...Katy Lied

Katy Lied is the fourth album by Steely Dan, originally released in 1975 by ABC Records. It went gold and peaked at #13 on the US charts. The single "Black Friday" also charted at #37.
It is the first appearance of singer Michael McDonald on a Steely Dan album. Jeff Porcaro, then only 20 years old, played drums on all the songs except "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)", which features session drummer Hal Blaine. It also marked the first appearance of Larry Carlton who played guitar on "Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More" Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were unhappy with the album's sound quality owing to an equipment malfunction with the then-new dbx noise reduction system. The group has claimed that the damage was mostly repaired after consulting with the engineers at dbx, but Fagen and Becker still refused to listen to the completed album.

The album was reissued by MCA Records after ABC Records was acquired by MCA in 1979.

On the turntable this Sunday...Crash

Crash is the second studio album by American rock group Dave Matthews Band, released on April 30, 1996.

By March 16, 2000, the album had sold seven million copies, and was certified 7× platinum by the RIAA. This is currently Dave Matthews Band's best-selling album.

Q said of the album, "equal parts originality and willful complication", and stated, "Although the band's determinedly jammy methods do lead them away from their songs at times, almost every track of Crash is at least 'good in parts'". Jim DeRogatis of Rolling Stone found "Matthews' vocals [...] too much like Sting's at times" and "the lyrics [...] typically banal". Comparing the band to their musical contemporaries (like Hootie and the Blowfish), DeRogatis stated, "Snappier violin-driven excursions such as "Tripping Billies" mix the progressive rock of U.K. or Eddie Jobson-era Roxy Music with the earthy folk rock of Fairport Convention. This eclecticism gives Matthews a slight edge over his peers, but that's sort of like saying you prefer vanilla ice cream to vanilla frozen yogurt. Me, I dig Cherry Garcia."

On the turntable this Sunday...Who Will Save The World? The Mighty Groundhogs

Who Will Save the World? The Mighty Groundhogs is a 1972 blues rock album recorded by The Groundhogs, originally released by United Artists Records in 1972, catalogue number UAS-5570. The most recent CD reissue is that of 2003 by EMI Records, catalogue number 07243-584815-2-5.

The sleeve artwork takes the form of a comic book featuring the Groundhogs depicted as superheroes, drawn by comic book artist Neal Adams. In the story they fight the personified evils of Over-Population, Pollution and the Warmongers of Politics and Religion. Each of the band members takes on a different evil thwarting them to begin with only to have them spin off and wreak havoc on another portion of the globe. The lyrics of each song deal with these themes and despite the comic-book nature of the cover, the lyrics are quite serious being politically and socially motivated.

On the turntable this Sunday...Widespread Panic (Mom's Kitchen)

Widespread Panic is the self-titled, second studio album by the Athens, Georgia-based band Widespread Panic. It was first released by Capricorn Records and Warner Bros. Records on July 30, 1991. It was re-released in 2001 by Zomba Music Group. The album will be issued on vinyl for the first time ever on July 29, 2014.  The vinyl-only reissue will be distributed via ThinkIndie distribution and sold only at participating independent record stores.

The band had originally recorded material in September 1990 at producer/collaborator/friend John Keane's studio in Athens, Georgia. This session, called Mom's Kitchen, featured the majority of the songs that would eventually be recorded for Widespread Panic, along with other tracks like "A of D", "Impossible", "Machine", "Liza's Apartment (L.A.)", "Conrad", "Contentment Blues", and "Holden Oversoul", of which the latter two were included on the reissues of Space Wrangler (1988). Mom's Kitchen, however, was never released because the band signed a six album deal with Capricorn Records in January 1991.

Recording of the album proper took place at Emerald Sound Studios (Nashville, Tennessee), Kiva Studios (Memphis, Tennessee), and Duck Tape Music Studio (Decatur, Alabama). The album features T Lavitz on keyboards and was produced by Johnny Sandlin.

The band played the album in its entirety at the Charter One Pavilion in Chicago on September 2, 2009.
